Frequently asked questions
Everything to know before installing TED
Compatibility, installation, license, safety: answers to the questions we hear most. Another question? The community answers on Discord.
General
What exactly is TED?
TED is a HEMS (home energy management system) that runs at home, on your own server (NAS, mini-PC, Linux server) or directly in Home Assistant OS. Connected to Home Assistant, it continuously measures what your home imports from or exports to the grid, then adjusts charging and discharging of all your inverters and batteries so they work together, like one big battery.
Does the software replace my battery's app (manufacturer HEMS)?
Your choice. In assisted mode, your original HEMS (for example the Zendure app) keeps control of its devices, and the power of your other inverters is added as reinforcement. In autonomous mode, the whole installation is regulated, independently of manufacturers.
Is TED's interface available in English?
Not yet: the interface is currently in French, and your browser's built-in translation works well with it. This website and its guides are in English. An English interface is proposed on the roadmap page: vote for it to raise its priority.
How many inverters and batteries can be controlled?
With an ACCESS or FULL POWER license, no software limit: add as many controlled or monitored inverters as you need. The FREE license, free with no time limit, controls up to 2 inverters (monitored inverters remain unlimited). In every case, the other limit is your electrical installation, which you frame with maximum charge and discharge power.
How can I suggest a new feature?
On the roadmap page: propose your idea or vote for others (interested or not interested) with just your email address, which is never displayed. The most requested ideas rise to the top.
What is a controlled inverter and a monitored inverter?
A controlled inverter receives charge and discharge setpoints. A monitored inverter is read-only: its battery and power are taken into account in the calculations, without it ever receiving a command. This is what makes assisted mode possible next to a manufacturer HEMS.
Compatibility
Which hardware is compatible?
Any inverter or battery that shows up in Home Assistant through its integration (Zendure, Huawei, SMA, Victron, Anker SOLIX, Deye…). Zendure devices are fully tested and validated. The grid measurement comes from your meter, read in Home Assistant or through a Shelly. Details are on the Compatibility page.
Can I mix several battery and inverter brands?
Yes, that is exactly the point: every inverter and battery visible in Home Assistant, whatever its brand, receives one shared setpoint, split according to its capacity and state of charge. See how to run several brands together, and the other problems solved on the Solutions page.
Do I need a Zendure battery or a Shelly meter?
No. The two requirements are Home Assistant and an electricity meter whose measurement (import and export) reaches Home Assistant. Your inverters and batteries simply need to be visible there, through their brand's integration. A Shelly remains a handy option if your meter is not yet connected to Home Assistant.
Is Home Assistant required?
Yes. Home Assistant is used to read sensors (batteries, power, meter) and to send setpoints to your inverters. With Docker or a Synology, a long-lived access token created in your Home Assistant profile (Security tab) is also requested on first launch; the Home Assistant OS app does not need one.
Are three-phase installations supported?
Only single-phase installations are regulated for now. Three-phase support is on the roadmap page: vote for it if you need it.
My brand is not listed, what can I do?
If your device shows up in Home Assistant, it can usually be controlled: give it a try. To ask for deeper support, propose it or vote on the roadmap page, or talk about it on the Discord server.
Installation
Do I need Docker to use TED?
Not with Home Assistant OS: the software installs as an app on the same machine as Home Assistant (Home Assistant OS guide). Otherwise, it is a public Docker image (tedenergy/ted on Docker Hub) running on an always-on machine: on a Synology NAS it installs entirely with the mouse in Container Manager (Synology guide), and with one command on a mini-PC or a Linux server. To try it without installing anything, open the live demo. Everything is explained in the installation guide.
Which image should I choose: Intel / AMD or ARM64?
With Docker Hub, Container Manager or Home Assistant OS, nothing to choose: the right version is picked automatically. For an offline archive, take the one matching the processor of the machine that will run the software. Intel / AMD: most Synology NAS, PCs and mini-PCs. ARM64: Raspberry Pi 4 or 5, ARM-based NAS, some routers running virtual machines. If in doubt, the uname -m command prints x86_64 (Intel / AMD) or aarch64 (ARM64). Both images are on the Download page.
Can I install TED directly in Home Assistant OS?
Yes: on Home Assistant OS (Green, Yellow, Raspberry Pi, mini-PC, virtual machine) or Supervised, the software installs as a Home Assistant app (formerly add-on), without Docker or access token, with its interface in the sidebar. Add its repository to Home Assistant: installation takes one click and new versions are then announced automatically. Everything is explained in the Home Assistant OS guide. Home Assistant Container and Core cannot run apps: use the Docker installation instead.
How long does installation take?
A few minutes: a few clicks with the repository in Home Assistant OS, about ten minutes with the mouse on a Synology, or a single command with Docker. A setup wizard then guides you: free license, Home Assistant connection, meter.
Can an AI help me with the installation?
Yes: the Install with an AI page offers a complete sheet to paste into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Le Chat. The AI then guides you step by step on your own hardware, including remote access. Never give it your Home Assistant token or your passwords.
How do I update the software?
Without losing anything: your settings, license and history stay in the data folder, and the interface tells you when a new version is out. Home Assistant OS: Home Assistant announces the new version, click Update (or enable auto update). Synology: Container Manager › Image › Update available › Update. Docker: docker pull tedenergy/ted:latest, then recreate the container with the same command. Details are in the installation guide.
License
Is it free?
The software is free until further notice: the FREE license is free for everyone with no time limit, and every new email address gets an ACCESS license to try every feature without limits. No credit card. If you wish, you can support development with a donation, as explained on the Pricing page, with no obligation.
Which licenses are available?
FREE: free for everyone, no time limit, up to 2 controlled inverters. ACCESS: offered to every new email address for 30 days to use every feature, with no inverter limit; at the end it becomes FREE by itself. FULL POWER (coming soon): one year, no inverter limit. Each license is used on one machine. Details are on the Pricing page.
What happens when the ACCESS license ends?
Nothing to do: the same license becomes a FREE license, free with no time limit. Regulation carries on; if more than 2 controlled inverters are enabled, only the first 2 in the list still receive setpoints (switch the others to monitored or request an extension). A warning appears one week before.
How do I extend my license?
At any time, in the software's interface (Paramètres › Licence › Demander une prolongation) or on the Extend my license page: enter the duration you need in days and a few words of explanation. Every request is reviewed; the answer arrives by email and, if approved, the new date is applied automatically (without Internet access: import the license file attached to the email).
Can I use my license on another machine?
A FREE, ACCESS or FULL POWER license is used on one machine. If you reinstall the software elsewhere (new NAS, moving from Docker to Home Assistant OS…), transferring the license to the new machine is offered on first start: the old one is then permanently blocked. A machine that stops checking its license for 2 months also frees its seat. For a company, an association or a local authority, multi-machine licenses exist: contact us on the Discord server.
Can I get several licenses?
A license is tied to an email address, which acts as a unique identifier. If you request again with the same email, you get the same license back rather than a new one.
I lost my license file, how do I get it back?
In the interface, Paramètres (Settings) › Licence › Obtenir ma licence gratuite with the same email address: your existing license is retrieved and activated. You can also fill in the form on the Download page again: your license can be downloaded again, instantly.
Do I have to go through the website to get a license?
No. After installing from Docker Hub or the Home Assistant repository, the free license is offered on first launch: enter your first name and email, then confirm your address (link received by email): it is then fetched from the license server and activated automatically. The Download page remains available to download the license file and import it by hand.
Why an account and a password?
With your free license, a ted-energy.fr account is created: an email asks you to confirm your address and gives you a temporary password. It protects your license: if you install the software on another machine, or import your license file elsewhere, it is asked to prove that you are the license holder. It also opens your customer area: licenses, machines, what the software reports, and remote access to your installation if you allow it. Lost password? Ask for a new one from the software or the site's login page. It can never be read by the TED team (see the privacy and transparency page).
Security and data
Is it safe for my batteries?
The minimum and maximum charge levels and the maximum power you set for each inverter are always respected. A device that does not respond correctly (self-calibration, setpoint not applied, lost communication) is automatically set aside, then retested. You remain responsible for your electrical installation: start with cautious limits. When a license is activated, you are asked to accept a warning: a non-compliant installation (French NF C 15-100 standard or local equivalent) can be overloaded.
Does my data leave my home?
The software runs on your own machine and talks to your Home Assistant on your local network. No measurement is sent: only the license is checked regularly (daily or weekly depending on the license) with the license server, along with a few anonymous counts (number of inverters and automations, grid type, subscribed power). The exact list of what is sent over the Internet is published on the privacy and transparency page.
